A Great Northern SD9 switching ore cars near Duluth MN in the GN ore yards in 1969.
Description:
BNSF operates the GN ore lines to this day with an ore dock near Duluth MN, and runs daily ore trains to Chitown. Four SD9s remain in service on the BNSF in 2012. #1550-1553. Search the archive for BNSF 1553. GN once had 4 ore docks in Duluth harbor each 2,400 feet long they remain in the water today, last used by the BN in 1988.

Title:
GN SD9 at Mpls Jct MN in 1955.
Description:
This was taken near the end of steam during the transition period. For a while diesels worked along side and with steam. During the fall grain rush some steam engines were pulled out of retirement up to 1958. SD9s survived on the BNSF up to 2011, and some will continue to serve as slugs.

Great Northern SD9 leaving Mpls MN in 1969.
Description:
Note the GN SD9 is running long hood forward leading the train. This train had left Union Yard off Hwy 280 by the University of MN. That was the GNs main large yard on the east end of the GN system.

BNSF SD9s running a transfer from Northtown into St Paul Daytons Bluff yard in 1998.
Description:
The BNSF used SD9s on transfers from Mpls MN Northtowh yard to St Paul Daytons bluff yard. SD9s ran from the 1950s on the GN until 2011 on the BNSF. These are both GN SD9s, note no dynamic brakes.
