Search the archive for BNSF 1553. GN once had 4 ore docks in Duluth harbor each 2,400 feet long they remain in the water today, last used by the BN in 1988. |

This was taken near the end of steam during the transition period. For a while diesels worked along side and with steam. During the fall grain rush some steam engines were pulled out of retirement up to 1958. SD9s survived on the BNSF up to 2011, and some will continue to serve as slugs. |
